Discussion: Socratic Seminars

  • Debrief from Monday's discussion
  • Take 10 minutes to complete the graphic organizer for chapter 4 of Of Mice and Men. It is important that you do this individually, or the discussion just won't work. This time we need to turn this end after the discussion!
  • Number into inside/outside groups. Each group gets 7 minutes in the inside group to discuss. Outside group takes notes- "Talked About" and "Not Talked About"

To think about: All analytical writing is based on what did the author say, what did he really mean, and, ultimately, so what! This is what conversations should be about!

Mini Lesson: Describing Setting

  • Look at 1st two paragraphs in Of Mice and Men.
  • Talk about the setting. What is it's significance? How is it described? Look at DIDLS- What tone is Steinbeck taking towards this place?
  • Look at my model picture of the Arcade Restaurant in Memphis. What tone does it portray?

  • Brainstorm description. Think about the place's significance. Think of all of the senses.
